How to Start a Chainsaw Safely
Starting a petrol chainsaw correctly and safely is essential for both performance and personal protection. Whether you're a first-time user or just need a refresher, this guide walks you through the proper steps to safely start your SHAYN chainsaw.
Before You Begin: Pre-Start Safety Checks
- Check that the chain brake is engaged (push forward).
- Ensure the chain is properly tensioned and lubricated.
- Inspect the fuel tank — use fresh fuel mixed at a 25:1 ratio (100ml of 2-stroke oil per 2.5L of petrol).
- Confirm bar and chain oil is topped up.
- Wear all appropriate PPE: gloves, eye protection, ear protection, cut-resistant trousers, and boots.
Step-by-Step: Cold Start Procedure
- Place the chainsaw on a flat, stable surface. Ensure the chain is not touching anything.
- Engage the chain brake. Push the front hand guard forward until it clicks.
- Set the choke to the full position. (Usually a lever or knob — refer to your manual.)
- Press the primer bulb. Pump it 5–6 times (if your model has one) until you see fuel inside the bulb.
- Hold the saw down firmly. Place one foot in the rear handle and hold the top handle with your left hand.
- Pull the starter cord briskly. Repeat until the engine "pops" or fires briefly.
- Move the choke to the half position. Then pull the cord again — the engine should now start.
- Let the engine run for a few seconds, then gently press the throttle once to disengage the choke.
For Warm Starts:
If the chainsaw has been used recently, skip the full choke and start with half choke or no choke depending on temperature.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting with the chain brake disengaged
- Poor footing or holding the saw in the air while starting
- Using old fuel (replace fuel every 30 days)
- Over-pulling the recoil cord (use short, controlled pulls)
